This scholarship was created in memory of Helen and Walter Blavat by their daughters. It was only following their parents’ death they became aware of the sacrifices their parents made that enabled Helen to attend nursing school. The Blavat’s were longtime Shoreline residents. Walter was fully disabled and by his early 50s, was unable to continue working. Helen began working as a nurse’s aide in various nursing homes to help support the family. Liking the work, Helen enrolled in the SCC Nursing Program. She continued working in geriatric nursing throughout her career well into her 60s.
